3 Ways To Make Your Moving Experience More Green

Blog

Recycling and reducing waste in your life does not have to stop just because you are planning to move. Here are a few ways that you can make your move a greener experience.

Skip The Cardboard Boxes

When most people think about moving, they picture stacks of cardboard boxes. However, the traditional cardboard boxes sold for moving purposes do not use recycled material; they use fresh trees to make their cardboard boxes.

There are a few different alternatives available to you instead of the traditional cardboard boxes. You can purchase boxes made from 100% recycled materials from green moving supply companies.

There are even some green moving supply companies that will allow you to rent recycled plastic bins. Recycled plastic bins can be used numerous times before they reach the end of their life. They are also easy to stack on top of one another and move around with a dolly. See if a business in your area offers them for rent.

Stay Away From Packing Peanuts & Bubble Wrap

The second area that generates a lot of waste when it comes to moving is the materials that you use to keep your items safe, such as packing peanuts and bubble wrap. Instead of purchasing traditional packing peanuts and bubble wrap, purchase green packing peanuts that are made from reusable materials.

You can also use materials that you already have to wrap up your belongings. If you read the newspaper, start collecting them a month or so before your move. Newspaper can be used to wrap up all your glass items and help fill in spaces in your moving boxes. You can even ask your friends and neighbors to donate their newspapers to you as well for your move.

You can also use materials that you already have. Instead of packing up your dish towels and bath towels inside of their own containers, use them to wrap up glass items and fill in space as you pack. Stack up all your dishtowels, bath towels, blankets, sheets and pillows and use them to pad your items and boxes. You can even use your clothes as well. By using materials you already own, you don't create any more waste.

Donate What You Don't Need

Finally, you can make your move more green by not moving items that you don't need anymore. Don't waste the materials to pack up items that you don't use anyways. As you pack up your home, set aside items that you don't use.

If you can, recycle these items in an appropriate fashion or donate these items to a local organization. There is no need to haul around items that you have no use for to your new home.

Make your moving experience a little more green by seeking out green moving containers and packing material and by properly getting rid of items that you no longer need.

Keeping That Storage Unit Clean

When I started thinking about renting a storage unit, it occurred to me that I was going to be keeping almost all of my belongings inside a single small space. I called a few friends who had stored before for tips, and they told me that it was really difficult to keep your items clean and dust free. However, they gave me a few tips, such as covering all of your belongings with a giant dust cover. I want you to have a positive storage experience, which is why my blog is all about storing smarter. Check out these articles to learn how to find a great unit, how to keep your stuff clean, and how to avoid problems.
